Your Bariatric Journey in a Nutshell
What is Revision Surgery? Revision surgery refers to a surgical procedure that is performed to replace, repair, or otherwise improve the outcome of a previous surgery. This type of surgery is often necessary when the original procedure did not achieve the desired results, when complications have arisen, or when changes over time (such as wear and tear on prosthetic devices) necessitate further surgical intervention.

I had gastric sleeve surgery elsewhere before, but it didn't give me the results I wanted. After considering my options, I decided to have SASI bypass surgery. After the surgery, my blood sugar, energy levels, and appetite stabilized, and my weight loss after the SASI procedure was much more consistent than it was with the gastric sleeve. Honestly, it was worth it. I feel much more in control now and healthier overall.

I previously had gastric sleeve surgery in my home country. I lost weight during the first year, but then my weight loss slowed down and I developed acid reflux. After doing a lot of research, I decided to have revision gastric bypass surgery at Alika Health Group. At first, I was scared because this would be my second surgery, but later I realized it was the best decision I ever made. After the surgery, my acid reflux disappeared immediately, and I reached the weight I hadn't been able to achieve with my previous surgery. The team was very supportive throughout the recovery process, and I felt I was in safe hands. Thank you to everyone.

A few years ago, I had gastric sleeve surgery at another place, but unfortunately, I didn't reach my target weight and started regaining the weight I had lost. Later, while researching revision surgeries, I came across Alika Health Group. After consulting with my doctor, we decided that a mini gastric bypass revision was the best option for me. At first, I was anxious about undergoing another surgery, but everything went much more smoothly than I had anticipated. I've started losing weight again and this time it felt more sustainable.

I had previously undergone a gastric sleeve surgery elsewhere, but it was unsuccessful. I wasn't able to reach my target weight, which made me feel like I'd gone through the surgery for nothing. Afterward, I decided to have revision gastric bypass surgery at Alika. The company's professionalism and experience made me feel safe and secure. I started losing weight shortly after the surgery, and unlike my previous surgery, my weight loss has been very steady and sustainable. I'm very satisfied.

Conversion Surgery
Conversion surgery transforms a previously performed bariatric procedure into a different, more effective one. This is typically considered when the initial surgery has not produced the desired weight loss results or when complications have arisen that require a more comprehensive solution.
Correction Surgery
Correction surgery addresses anatomical or functional issues that have developed after a previous bariatric operation. These corrections may be necessary due to complications, inadequate initial results, or changes in the patient's anatomy over time.
Reversal Surgery
Reversal surgery is performed to restore the original anatomy when a patient experiences severe complications or wishes to discontinue their bariatric procedure. This restores the stomach and digestive system to its pre-surgery state.
Re-sleeve or Re-bypass
Re-sleeve or re-bypass procedures involve repeating or revising a previous sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass. These procedures are considered for patients who have experienced weight regain or inadequate weight loss after their initial surgery.
Band Over Bypass or Sleeve
Adding a gastric band over an existing bypass or sleeve provides an additional restriction mechanism. This combination approach can enhance weight loss outcomes for patients who have not achieved their goals with the original procedure alone.
5 Steps of Surgery
Pre-Op Assessment
Upon consultation, your doctor will assess the underlying reasons for your previous surgery's outcome and will plan an appropriate revision approach.
Preparation
Before surgery, your medical team will carry out all necessary tests, including blood work, X-rays, and anesthesia evaluation.
The Surgery
Revision surgery is carried out laparoscopically under general anesthesia, tailored to the specific revision required — conversion, correction, reversal, re-sleeve, re-bypass, or band placement.
Closure
The revised stomach and intestinal connections are secured, and the incisions are closed with sutures.
Recovery
Patients stay 3–4 nights in the hospital for monitoring while nurses and surgeons perform regular check-ups.
Revision Surgery Recovery and Diet
Nutrition plays a crucial role in a successful recovery after revision surgery. Patients follow a structured dietary plan to allow the stomach to heal properly and adapt to its new size.
- For the first 15 days, a liquid diet is recommended. This includes water, clear soups, and protein-rich liquids to maintain hydration and support healing.
- During the next 15 days, patients transition to a pureed (soft) diet, gradually introducing smoother foods that are easy to digest.
- After the first month, patients can begin to return to solid foods, provided they follow the recommended dietary guidelines. Maintaining a balanced diet and portion control is essential for long-term success and sustainable weight loss.
Recovery after revision surgery is a gradual and well-managed process that allows patients to return to their daily routine step by step.
- During the first 3 days, patients are advised to rest and focus on recovery under medical supervision. Light movement such as short walks may be encouraged to support circulation.
- From day 3 onwards, patients can begin light daily activities. Those with desk-based jobs can usually return to work, provided they avoid physical strain and take regular rest breaks.
- After the first week, patients may resume light duties, as long as they do not involve heavy lifting or intense physical effort.
- By week 4, most patients can return to normal activities, including jobs that require lifting, depending on their individual recovery progress and doctor's approval.
